To explore the five-pattern personality characteristics of college students and their relationship with family rearing style.
Methods

A total of 421 college students were surveyed with the Traditional Chinese Medicine Five-pattern Personality Scale (short form) and S-EMBU questionnaire (a short form of a family rearing style questionnaire
EMBU is the Swedish for "My memories of upbringing" ).

The average scores of students in the five dimensions of the five-pattern personality scale were ranked in the following order: Shaoyin

Shaoyang
>
Taiyang
>
Taiyin
>
Yin-yang Balance. There is a positive correlation between both parents′ rejection
emotional warmth
and overprotection/control and Taiyang-pattern personality (

0.05); between both parents′ emotional warmth
and overprotection/control and Shaoyang-pattern personality (

0.05); between both parents′ emotional warmth and Yin-yang balance personality (

<
0.05); between both parents′ emotional warmth
and mother′s overprotection/control and Shaoyin-pattern personality (

0.05); and between both parents′ rejection
and overprotection/control and Taiyin-pattern personality (

mother′s emotional warmth is negatively correlated with Taiyin-pattern personality (P

Conclusion

Shaoyin and Shaoyang are two prominent types of pattern personality of college students and there is a correlation between family rearing style and the five-pattern personality.
